Yes, it is customary to tip the villa staff at the conclusion of your stay, as they work hard to ensure your comfort and enjoyment.

How much should I tip the staff? An appropriate gratuity is 10% – 15% of the villa rental amount:

  • 10% in Winter (high season)
  • 15% in Summer (low season)

How is the tip distributed among the staff? The gratuity is divided among the staff members based on their seniority and the services they provided. Typically, the largest portion goes to the cook, and the remaining amount is distributed among the other staff members such as the housekeeper, gardener, and laundress.

What about tipping the van driver? It is also customary to tip your van driver approximately 10% of the total fare after they drop you off at the airport on your return home.

When and how should I give the tip? We recommend placing the tips in individual envelopes for each staff member. You can give these envelopes to the staff when the van picks you up for the airport on your departure day.

Is there a suggested breakdown for tipping each staff member? Yes, here is a suggested breakdown for tipping at Terra Nova Villa, though you may adjust the amounts based on your experience with each staff member:

  • Cook: Largest tip percentage
  • Housekeeper: Moderate tip percentage
  • Gardener/Laundress: Remaining portion divided

Please ensure the total tip amounts to at least 10% – 15% of your villa rental cost.

Hurricane season in Jamaica officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak period typically between August and October. While direct hits from hurricanes are relatively rare, it’s important to stay informed and prepared if you’re traveling during this time.

Here’s what you should know:

  1. Monitoring the Weather: Keep an eye on weather updates, as local authorities and resorts closely monitor potential storms. Reliable sources include the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and local Jamaican news outlets.

  2. Villa Preparedness: Most villas, hotels, and resorts have hurricane contingency plans in place, which include securing the property and ensuring guests’ safety. Staff will guide you through these procedures if necessary.

  3. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers weather-related cancellations, delays, or disruptions. Make sure to check the specifics of your policy regarding hurricanes.

  4. Flights and Travel Disruptions: Airlines typically allow rescheduling or refunds for flights affected by hurricanes. Be sure to check with your airline for their hurricane policy and have a flexible travel plan in place.

  5. Communication: If a storm is approaching, stay in close contact with your villa management and follow their guidance on safety measures and evacuation if needed.

While hurricanes can disrupt plans, with proper precautions and flexibility, your trip to Jamaica can still be enjoyable and safe.
